Official Google Blog Posting

Google was made available to the Chinese people in early 2006, however, due to government restrictions, some search results had to be filtered out. The Chinese government is very strict and has laws against anti-communist propaganda, free-speech propaganda, etc. A recent attack on Google's HQ in China to gain access to human-rights activists account information, led Google to consider pulling out not because of a potential threat, but to promote free speech.

I think China trying to filter their internet is ridiculous! They actually have the entire internet infrastructure set up to allow censoring, but it bogs the entire system down. Techincal details of how it works HERE. With China's economy growing, it shows the limits of how communism is an unstable government. They want to control everything, but after a certain point, it just becomes impossible.

I also hear the Australian government is getting dangerously close to passing a law for censoring internet.. Its rather scary :(

Yeah, Australia is heavily considering censoring the internet, if it does, I will cry. Not only do we have terrible download speeds, but we wouldn't even be able to view what we wanted.
If I was 18, I would so vote for the sex party.

This is so crazy, I can't see any reason to block parts of the internet like that. Stupid Chinese government.

And the censors in Australia are crazy! Almost everything is getting censored! :(
Just look at L4D2 for example.
And if the Australian internet becomes even worse...well, I'm just glad I don't live in Australia.

From what I've hear of the Aussie censoring I thought it was just blocking child porn and stuff like that.
The Chinese censoring is just stupid.

Well that's good then. I think every country should block child pornography.

I don't think it will be anything major but they will probably do it. IDC as long as the don't go as over the top as DET.

Department of Education and Training. Don't really know what they do. But they block the internet at school and on the laptops. (government issue paper weights)

L4D2 being censored wasn't because of the internet censors, it's because we have no 18+ rating for video games. If a game is considered 18+ material, then it's banned. With L4D2 on the PC, you just have to change one tiny thing and then BOOM it's uncensored, I think they made it that easy on purpose.
Also with the 19+ games thing, a lot of games that are 18+ in other countries are being passed here for 15+, so that's an argument that people who want an 18+ rating can use. Children under 18 getting 18+ games.

My laptop from school doesn't have a single thing blocked on it, unless I'm using it at school, then it uses the school's filter. So no Facebook or MSN.

For me no MSN, Facebook ( most proxys banned to), My Space, GHC, ZU, ATG forums or anything like that. The DET home page is even blocked.

Ohhhh, ok. Well I doubt the government would block the internet in the same way as DET. :P

And I know L4D2 doesn't have anything to do with the internet censors, but I'm just saying that Australian censors are crazy.

L4D2 censors are stupid. My friend said they just blur some stuff and some other crap. I can't really remember.
In some ways its good that we don't have a R18+ rating for games cause I can get them. My mum didn't let me get MA15+ games until this year. If you think it will be banned just pre-order it and you get to keep it.

That's your problem, don't ruin it for everybody else.

I recently did a presentation about the stuff going on in China. Stupid communists. We don't censor ANYTHING here. It's awesome.

Only a few things are censored here :D

The C2KS system my school uses for blocking sites blocks approximately... 80% of the internet.

I personally think that there should be some censoring on internet sites. I'm talking about the sites that have illegal acitivity like Child porn and other effed up stuff like that. That's the only way I would support partial censoring.

Other than that, I believe censoring the internet is wrong and is a violation on personal freedom.

Censoring things that are AGAINST the rules is logical. Censoring things just because it's bad for a select group of people, is silly.
